This class is for any adult who is interested in taking their ceramic hand-building, wheel throwing, and glazing to the NEXT LEVEL. Over the course of 8 weeks, artist and expert clay instructor, Mackenzie Sheehan-D’Arrigo, will help guide and teach special ceramic clay techniques! Class meets Thursdays, 5:30 - 8:00 pm, October 2 - November 20.
Students who can do the following will get the most out of this class:
• Identify leather hard, chocolate hard and bone dry clay
• Reliably throw or hand build a cylinder
• Trim or attach feet and handles
• Understand the basics of applying glaze
• Imagine clay pieces they would like to create
Some techniques taught may include ceramic design for function, increasing visual effectiveness, and communicating artistic intent through: slab and coil building; sculpting and pinching; thrown and altered pieces; making larger work; reductive processes, such as kurinuki; surface and glaze design, including paper resist and slip transfers; and any other skills students are hoping to implement in their practice for a developed ceramic expression!
Students must purchase $25 bag of new clay and will also have access to unlimited reclaimed clay. Additional new clay available for purchase upon request. Outside clay is not permitted. Students will be charged to fire pieces based on the weight of dried clay.
Adult Clay students receive free admission to the Friday Clay Lab--to secure a time slot for a session, check in-person with your Teaching Artist.
