A Homeschool Partnership Program

1:30-3:00 Thursdays, October – April

Experience dynamic learning environments through LEARN 517,  a homeschool partnership program that explores a monthly theme through the disciplines of art, science, nature, and history.  Each program partner hosts a Thursday homeschooler session based on the following calendar:

  •  1st week of each month – REACH Studio Art Center
  • 2nd week of each month – Woldumar Nature Center
  • 3rd week of each month – Impression 5
  • 4th week of each month – Michigan History Center

REACH Learn 517 registration

REACH Studio Art Center
Discover new art techniques and explore elements and principles of art through project-based structured lessons or Open Art Labs.  Older students (ages 8-15) can pre-enroll in monthly structured lessons designed around Learn 517 themes while younger students can enjoy exploring art independently at a variety of art stations in the open art lab environment.

Structured Art Lesson:  Pre-registration required.  Ages 8 to 15
Cost:  $12 per student (additional students from same family, same month $2 discount)
Space is limited. Minimum of 5 students for class to run.  Maximum of 20.

October – Watercolor Paint Techniques
November – Block Relief Prints
December – Clay Pinch-Pot Planets
January – Weaving with Various Materials
February – Tree Sculptures with Wire
March – Polymer Clay Beetle Sculptures
April – Acrylic Still Life Painting on Canvas

Open Art Lab Session: Drop-in, pay at door, or pre-register.  Spots only guaranteed with pre-registration. All ages (geared to ages 5-12) Children under 10 must have an adult accompanying while in open lab session. Participants rotate around different art lab stations and work independently or with peers. Facilitator will provide guidance and suggestions. Stay and explore for 30 minutes or all 1.5 hours. Proposed stations (subject to change) will include: Painting/drawing, Printmaking, Collage, Recycle Inventions, Modeling Clay (clay stays at REACH), Fiber Arts

Cost $8 per participant per session.
Seven month pass for all REACH Art Lab sessions per individual: $50.  Sorry, we cannot pro-rate pass.  Additional family members get a $2 discount on individual sessions or $10 off 7-month pass. Space is limited to 25 per session.

Woldumar Nature Center
Nature Classroom Drop-off program for students 1st to 5th grades. 

For over 50 years, Woldumar Nature Center has provided the Greater Lansing Community with unique educational experiences in science and nature.  Explore the great outdoors and learn more about Michigan natural sciences as you hike our trails, view demonstrations, and perform experiments with our staff naturalists.

  • February – Winter Tree Identification
  • March – Insect Safari
  • April – Color Adaptations

Cost: $5.00 per student, multiple students in family only $4.00 per student
Free for members at a household level.

Science Lab: Drop-in program for students 1st to 5th.

Come explore the world of science with a family-centered science environment.  Children will be able to participate in hands-on science.  Experiments  will build scientific vocabulary, promote hands-on exploration, and so much more.  Environment will promote individual learning as well as cooperation and other group skills.

History Classroom: Drop-in program for students 1st to 5th.

Come in and experience Michigan’s rich past through four floors of exhibit space.  Explore history through hands-on activities, demonstrations and discussions with History Center staff.
