Surface Design on Cloth
2012 Days to Dye For at REACH Studio
- FEB 25, 12:30 – 5:30 TOTALLY IMMERSED:
Immersion dyeing by the color wheel using fiber reactive dyes. Cloth dyed in this workshop can be the base for surface design techniques covered in subsequent workshops, layering color and pattern to create interesting and beautiful art cloth.
$110 TOTAL FEE (includes an $80 supply fee)
At the end of this workshop you will take home:
12 x ½ yard pieces of cloth in solid colors of the color wheel
2 x ½ yd pieces of cloth dyed in your own color mixes
Several smaller swatches of other participants’ color mixes
½ yd piece dyed in your color #1 with your color #2 shibori layer
½ yd piece shibori dyed in your color #2
Supplies included in fee: 8.5 yds of prepared for dye cotton broadcloth, all dyes and dye chemicals used during workshop.

Preparing tools to use for surface techniques on cloth.
$90 TOTAL FEE (includes $60 supply fee)
At the end of this workshop you will take home:
A blank wood-framed screen prepared with duct tape
A developed screen with image or pattern of your creation
Stencils from fusible web to use with blank screen
Carved blocks for printing
Supplies included in fee: eraser material for carving blocks, 2 printing screens and emulsion chemicals, fusible web
- APRIL 21 & 28, 12:30 – 5:30 CAN YOU RESIST?
Exploring applied materials and methods to create resist designs on cloth. Two-session workshop. $80 (without fabric) – $95 (if you need fabric) TOTAL FEE (for both days) includes $20 (you already have fabric from previous sessions) or $35 supply fee (if you need fabric for this session)
- Flour paste resist + thickened textile paint
- washable glue resist + dye paint
- wax batik + immersion dye
- soy wax
At the end of this workshop you will take home:
1 to 2 yds of cloth patterned with resist designs using flour paste and glue resists, beeswax and soy wax resist for thickened dyes and textile paints. Participants can bring in their own previously dyed cotton or silks, or purchase cotton to use at the workshop.
Supplies included in fee: all resist pastes and materials, 2 yards of cloth (for $15 additional fee), textile paints, dyes and auxiliaries used during workshop
Participants should bring to workshop: 2 yards (total) of previously dyed cotton or silk if desired (or cloth is available at workshop for additional fee), any printing tools prepared in previous workshop(s)—(there will also be printing tools available at studio).
